Application for internship as Game programmer

Dear Mr. Murray,
My name is Tong Huu Khiem, currently pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering at the National University of Singapore. A week ago, the internship recruitment for game programmer was posted on Blizzard Entertainment website, and it really caught my interest. Thus, I am writing this letter to you, eager to become a part of “Blizzard country” during this summer.
Being a gamer as well as a programmer, I have long been fascinated about becoming one of those who actually creates games that captivate even the most demanding gamers, titles such as Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo – Blizzard’s trademark. And even though my game development experience has just started last year, with a few simple games, I have been lucky to meet and work with passionate teammates, innovating existing games with new ideas. For example, we created “Resource Wars”, a desktop game developed on the Monopoly board, and a few other games that can be downloaded from the links in my resume.
Besides that, frequent training in NUS has equipped me with sufficient mastery of C++ and OpenGL, extensive exposure with scripting languages such as Python, JavaScript and Ruby as well as Windows application development experience. In addition, I believe my knowledge in producing user interfaces, movies, animations and other types of graphics will become useful when working with Blizzard’s designers.
Given a chance to prove myself, I am confident that my past experiences and skills will create positive contributions while I work as part of Blizzard’s development team, be it improvements on established or under-development titles, such as Dota 2.0 and new version of World of Warcraft. I am looking forward to a challenging yet enjoyable experience in “Blizzard country”, where my skills and passion for gaming are utilized to the fullest.
Attached with this letter is my resume and referral letter. If you would like to schedule an interview, please call me at +65-9156 1848, anytime. And I am certain that you won't be disappointed.
Thank you.

Yours Sincerely,
Tong HUU KHIEM (Mr.) | +65-9156-1848

  1. Hi Mark, this job is so cool! Wish you would get it! =)

Anyway, I think that the 1st 3 paragraphs are rather well done. However, I feel that it can be more concise, it is quite descriptive. Like you do not need to mention about your team mates.

Overall, I think it is very good and I will definitely choose you. Since this job is quite a technical one, you may want to describe the games that you made using which programming language? Which would further demonstrate your application of what you have learn in school. =)

    Yupz! =)
    that's all! =)

  2. Hi Mark,

This internship is surely the dream internship of many! Do let me have free passes on blizzard games when you do get the internship!

Now for my comments on the letter.

This application is well written, it clearly highlights your expertise which I believe are necessary in order to secure the internship at Blizzard.

Also, you mentioned that you could contribute and hope the company will allow you to make use of your skills to the fullest. I think this is good as Ms Lim has taught in class.

All in all, a good application letter!

  3. @Wee Lee:
Thanks :) I am trying to build up my skills so that all the thing in there are facts in the future. I really don't know how to shorten the letter, though. Perhaps you can suggest it a bit more? I 'll really appreciate that.

Then for the teammates part, it was my intention to include them, as everything would not exist if we didn't work as a team. Plus, a team player should always stick with his team, I guess :P

Lastly, I cut short the elaboration about the game because it's too long. There would be a link in my resume that redirects the reader to my blog, where I talk more details about them.

Anyway, thanks to your comment, really :) u really are staying late, haha

@Shawn: haha, I will see if I can pass u some copy if I work there someday. Thanks for your compliments, though :)

  4. Hi Mark,

Firstly, a very good internship to apply for I wold say.

Well, I have some suggestions for improvement though. As follows:

    1. You might want to make the subject bold and put it after Dear Mr. Murray

    2. Make the entire body text normal, and remove the bold parts. Looks more professional.

    3. I think it would be a good idea to touch on a little praise about Bizzard Entertainment in the first paragraph itself, so that it catches the reader's attention and makes him want to read more.

    4. "Even though there will be thousands of applicants to Blizzard this summer": I think you should not remove this line. I believe it does not add to your application letter. Everyone knows their will be a thousand application letters, and your skills should speak for you if you are better than them.

    5. "If you would like to schedule an interview, please call me at +65-9156 1848, anytime.": I think something more kind would be better. Something like "I would be highly obliged to your if you could consider me for an interview."

The above are all just my suggestions and opinions. They might not be all correct. Good luck with your next application letter draft.

    Cheers.
    Akash
